Chacruna (Psychotria viridis)

Chacruna Information

Psychotria viridis is the botanical name of the plant more commonly known as chacruna. It is part of the Rubiaceae family of plants. The Rubiaceae family is more commonly known as the coffee family. It is made up of over 10,000 species and 600 genera.

In the traditional sacred drink called ayahuasca, Psychotria viridis was one of the plants often used, in conjunction with Banisteriopsis caapi (or another species of Banisteriopsis).

South American shamans mix leaves of Psychotria viridis (it contains tryptamine alkaloids known as DMT) and sections of Banisteriopsis Caapi (it contains compounds known as MAOI's) together in order for the DMT to be absorbed orally.

Ayahuasca made with Psychotria viridis is commonly used for first time consumers and those with limited experience. This is because Psychotria viridis has a lower concentration of DMT than the other plant (Diplopterys cabrerana) that is most often mixed with Banisteriopsis caapi to produce traditional ayahuasca.

Although the only known medical use of Psychotria viridis was in a juice prepared to treat migraine headaches, its use in the preparation of ayahuasca goes back thousands of years. The plant is native to South America. It can still be found growing wild in areas of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It is also cultivated as a cash crop in these countries.

You can legally buy chacruna leaves (foliage) from companies that ship from the USA, but using them for the DMT they contain is illegal in the United States and some other countries. Do not ingest this plant for the DMT content if doing so is illegal where you live. Psychotria viridis seeds can be used to grow new plants.
